Phobia
Phobias are quite a varied and a difficult mental disorder to treat in the world of mental health. These irrational and sometimes crippling fears affect millions of people and massive amounts of energy has gone into trying to find a cure. While this energy has yielded some results, there are still many people who go through life without ever really having a chance to overcome their fears. The sad thing is that while there is no one-shot cure for unnatural fear, it is something that can be slowly worked through and eventually dealt with enough to no longer strongly impact a person's life.
Not too long ago, the common theory on treating any fear was to expose the person to their fear over and over again until the person learned there was literally nothing to fear. While there was some success with the scare-the-fear-out approach, the truth is that this more often than not caused a great deal more harm than good.
Thankfully archaic methods of treating these irrational fears have faded from popularity and now modern methods are used. However, while these newer methods do seem to alleviate the suffering of many people to some degree, phobias are still very difficult to treat. However, doing something is generally better than doing nothing and with these kinds of fears, doing something can help.
The important thing to remember is that if one type of treatment does not work, move onto another. No one is the same and thus their fears are not the same, even two people who have an irrational fear of other people will have gained their fear differently. It is important to remember that when you are treating any mental illness that very few treatments work over night and generally it will take some time for any treatment to yield results.
When you or someone you love is being treated for a irrational fear, the most important thing to remember is sticking to one treatment plan. While not every treatment plan is going to work, you will never know if it won't work unless you spend some time trying it. Once it is obvious a particular treatment plan is not working then work together with your treatment team to formulate another plan.
Phobias are a difficult disorder to treat as compared to other illnesses. However, with a combination of medication and modern therapy techniques there is a chance that they can become less impactful and that anyone afflicted with this disorder can go on to lead a very productive and wonderful life.
